TN & the angle
TN, twisted nematic, is the original LCD. It showed up in 1970s calculators and watches, and it's still the fastest and cheapest panel you can buy. It builds a pixel by twisting light through a 90 degree turn, and it flips that twist quicker than any other LCD, which is why esports monitors still run TN at 360Hz and beyond. There's one catch, and you can spot it from your chair: the twist only lines up when you look dead on. Lean a few degrees off and the picture starts to fall apart.

TN switches a pixel faster than any other LCD. That means less smear behind fast motion, which is the whole reason competitive players still buy it. Pick a panel type and watch the trail behind the moving block, then drag the speed up to make the gap obvious.

Fewer colors, faked
Most TN panels are 6-bit. They show fewer real shades than a true 8-bit screen, then fake the rest by flickering between two close colors so fast your eye blends them. Flip between the modes and watch the bands in this gray ramp show up, then hide.

The narrow sweet spot
Every panel has a cone of angles where the picture still looks right. On TN that cone is tight, which is why the edges of a big TN screen can look off while you stare at the center. Drag the viewer around the panel, then switch on IPS to see how much wider its cone is.

Tilt up, tilt down
TN's worst axis is vertical. Look slightly up or down and the gray ramp doesn't just fade, it can flip, so the dark end and the bright end trade places. Slide from below the screen to above it and watch the ramp turn inside out.
