Mini-LED & thousands of tiny lamps

Mini-LED is not a new kind of screen. It is the same LCD-plus-backlight you just met, with one change: the backlight LEDs shrank from about the size of a grain of rice to smaller than a grain of sand. Shrink the lamp and you can pack thousands of them where hundreds used to fit, split into thousands of zones that dim on their own. The payoff is the thing full-array could not quite finish. Black gets deep, highlights get blinding, and the halo around a bright moon on a dark sky shrinks until you stop noticing it. It is still a backlight though, so it never fully disappears.

This is the best a normal LED backlight gets: a few hundred zones, each the size of a postage stamp. Black is already deep, but the one bright moon still bleeds a soft halo as wide as its zone.

How small is mini?

The only real change from a normal LED backlight is the size of the LED. Shrink each one below a millimeter and a fistful becomes a swarm. Flip between the two and watch the same patch of backlight fill in.

The tradeoff

What the swarm buys, and what it can't

Mini-LED is the most an LCD backlight has ever managed. It pushes black and brightness hard, but it is still a lamp behind a shutter.

Strengths

  • Goes blindingly bright, often past 2,000 nits, so HDR highlights and sunlit rooms are no problem.
  • Thousands of zones push black far deeper than a normal LED, closing in on OLED in a bright room.
  • No burn-in and a long life, since it is still a plain LED backlight under the hood.

Weaknesses

  • Zones are not pixels, so a bright object on black still blooms a faint halo.
  • Costs more than a normal LED set, for a backlight you are not supposed to notice.
  • Fast, tiny bright details can outrun the zones, and you can sometimes catch them dimming.

Mini-LED, quick answers

Is Mini-LED the same as MicroLED?

No, and the names are a trap. Mini-LED is still an LCD with a backlight. The LEDs just shrank so thousands fit behind the panel. MicroLED is self-emissive, where each pixel is its own microscopic LED and there is no LCD layer or backlight at all. Mini-LED improves an old idea. MicroLED replaces it.

Is Mini-LED better than OLED?

It depends on the room and the content. Mini-LED gets far brighter and never burns in, so it wins in a bright living room and on HDR highlights. OLED lights every pixel on its own, so it has perfect black and zero blooming, which wins in a dark room. Mini-LED narrows the gap but does not erase it.

Why does Mini-LED still bloom?

Because zones are not pixels. A 4K screen has 8.3 million pixels but only a few thousand zones, so a single bright pixel still has to light up the whole zone around it. More zones shrink the halo, which is the whole point of going mini, but they never get it down to zero.
