RGB Mini-LED & a backlight that makes its own color

This is the newest rung on the backlit ladder, and the first one in years that changes the light itself. Every LCD so far has shone one color of light, white or blue, through a stack of filters to build a picture. QLED cleaned that light up with quantum dots. RGB Mini-LED takes the next step and rebuilds the backlight out of separate red, green and blue mini-LEDs, so the light starts out in full color before it ever reaches the screen. The first one you can actually buy, Hisense's 116 inch UX, runs thousands of these RGB zones at up to 8,000 nits. It is still an LCD underneath, so it still has shutters and a filter and per-zone dimming. What changed is where the color is born.

Color, not just brightness, per zone

A normal mini-LED zone has one job, get brighter or dimmer. An RGB zone can also choose its color. That changes how a bright object sits against the dark around it. Flip the two and watch the glow.

The name game

This is where the marketing gets slippery. Samsung's Micro RGB and LG's Micro RGB evo are the same idea as RGB Mini-LED, an RGB-backlit LCD. None of them are self-emissive Micro-LED, no matter what the word Micro suggests. Tap a column to place each one.

The tradeoff

What the RGB backlight buys, and what it can't

RGB Mini-LED is the brightest, most colorful LCD ever built. It is also brand new, costs a fortune, and still cannot beat self-emissive black.

Strengths

  • The widest color of any LCD, reaching around 95 percent of BT.2020 because the light is already pure red, green and blue.
  • Huge brightness, up to 8,000 nits on the first models, since no light is lost converting blue into other colors.
  • Zones can set color and brightness together, so blooming around bright objects is dimmer and color-matched instead of a gray smear.

Weaknesses

  • Still an LCD. Dimming is per zone, not per pixel, so perfect black and zero bloom remain out of reach.
  • Brand new and expensive, sold mostly in very large, very pricey sets, and early reviews are mixed.
  • The naming is a mess. Micro RGB and Micro RGB evo sound like Micro-LED but are the same RGB-backlit LCD.

RGB Mini-LED, quick answers

Is RGB Mini-LED the same as Micro-LED?

No. RGB Mini-LED is an LCD with a red, green and blue backlight behind it. Micro-LED is self-emissive, where each pixel is its own tiny LED and there is no backlight or LCD at all. Micro-LED costs many times more and only comes in very large sizes. Samsung's Micro RGB and LG's Micro RGB evo, despite the name, are RGB Mini-LED, not Micro-LED.

Is RGB Mini-LED better than OLED?

In a bright room, often yes, since it goes far brighter and shows wider, more saturated color while never burning in. In a dark room OLED still wins, because its self-lit pixels switch fully off for perfect black with no blooming. As with QLED, the better choice depends on your room.

Does it still use quantum dots?

Mostly not. The point of an RGB backlight is that the light is already colored, so the quantum-dot film that QLED relies on can be dropped. A few early sets still mix in a little quantum dot to fine-tune color, but the goal of the design is to make the backlight itself do the job.
