QLED & cleaning up the color of light

QLED is not a new kind of screen, no matter what the box says. It is the same LCD with a backlight you have been reading about, plus one clever film. Mini-LED fixed how much light there was and where it landed. QLED goes after the color of that light. A layer of quantum dots, tiny crystals that glow a single pure color when blue light hits them, turns a messy white backlight into clean red and green. The payoff shows up when the screen gets bright, where that color stays deep and saturated instead of washing out. It is still an LCD though. The dots fix the color of the backlight, not the black.

What is a quantum dot?

A quantum dot is a crystal so small that its size decides its color. Hit a batch of them with blue light and each one glows back a single pure color. Tiny dots glow blue-green, bigger dots glow red. Drag the size and watch the color walk across the spectrum.

Station 02

Clean up the color of the light

Now you know dots glow pure colors. Here is what they do to the backlight. A plain white LED throws off a broad, smeared rainbow, so the filter has muddy light to carve red and green from. Slide the quantum dots in and that smear snaps into three clean spikes. Watch the spectrum sharpen and the swatches wake up.

A normal white LED is really a blue LED with a yellow phosphor smeared on top. It looks white, but its light is a broad mush. The color filter has to carve red and green out of that mush, so saturated colors come out dull and a little off.

It is still an LCD

This is the part the marketing skips. QLED does not light its own pixels. It is the same layered LCD sandwich, with the quantum-dot film sitting right on top of the backlight. Pull that one film out and watch what the screen has to work with.

The tradeoff

What the dots buy, and what they can't

Quantum dots are the best thing to happen to LCD color in years. They make the light cleaner, not the panel smarter. The backlight still leaks.

Strengths

  • Wide, accurate color from clean red and green primaries, covering most of the DCI-P3 range used for HDR.
  • Holds that saturation even at peak brightness, so bright HDR scenes stay rich instead of washing out.
  • Goes very bright and never burns in, since underneath it is still a normal LED backlight.

Weaknesses

  • Quantum dots fix color, not contrast. Black depends on the LCD and local dimming, so blooming can still show.
  • Plain edge-lit QLED with few dimming zones is barely better than a normal LED set in a dark room.
  • The badge gets stretched. QLED, Neo QLED and QNED all describe an LCD, not a self-emissive screen like OLED.

Is QLED the same as OLED?

No, and the one-letter difference hides a huge one. QLED is an LCD with a quantum-dot backlight, so it still shines one sheet of light through shutters. OLED is self-emissive, where every pixel makes its own light and switches fully off for perfect black. QLED wins on brightness, OLED wins on black and blooming.

Is QLED better than OLED?

It depends on the room. QLED gets brighter, holds color better at peak, and never burns in, so it shines in a bright living room and on HDR highlights. OLED has perfect black and zero blooming, which wins in a dark room. Neither one just wins, they are tuned for different rooms.

What are Neo QLED and QNED?

More badges for the same idea. Neo QLED is Samsung's name for a QLED that uses a Mini-LED backlight, so you get the wide color of quantum dots plus thousands of dimming zones. QNED is LG's version of the same combo. Both are still LCDs with a quantum-dot film, not self-emissive panels.
