- Sit-down restaurants: 15 to 20 percent is standard, 20 percent for good service, and 25 percent or more for exceptional service.
- Counter and quick service: often 10 to 15 percent or simply rounding up, since there is little table service.
- Delivery: 10 to 20 percent, with a few dollars as a sensible minimum on small orders.
- Bars: about 1 to 2 dollars per drink, or 15 to 20 percent of the tab.
- Large groups: check the bill first, since many places add a service charge of 18 to 20 percent automatically.
How to calculate a tip

- 1. Pick a percent. Decide what you want to leave, for example 18 or 20 percent of the bill.
- 2. Multiply. Tip equals the bill times the percent. A 20 percent tip on a 60 dollar bill is 60 times 0.20, which is 12 dollars.
- 3. Add it up. The total is the bill plus the tip, so 60 plus 12 is 72 dollars. Add tax first if you prefer to tip on the post-tax amount.
- 4. Split it. Divide the total by the number of people. For 72 dollars between 3 people, that is 24 dollars each.
