Time duration calculator FAQ
A time duration calculator determines the exact span of time between two distinct points. This tool is structured to handle the three most common time calculations used in payroll, scheduling, and project management:
- Clock Time: Calculates the exact hours and minutes between a start time and an end time.
- Date Duration: Calculates the absolute total number of days, months, and years between two calendar dates.
- Decimal Work Hours: Subtracts unpaid break durations from a work shift and converts the final total into a decimal format (e.g., 8.5 hours) for standard payroll processing.
How to calculate time duration between two times?
To calculate the time duration, convert both times to a 24-hour clock. Then, subtract the start time from the end time. If the end time is smaller (meaning it crosses midnight), add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting.
How many days are there between two dates?
Use the Dates tab in our calculator to instantly find the exact number of days between any two calendar dates. It will provide the absolute total days, as well as a breakdown of years, months, and days.
How to calculate decimal hours for work?
Payroll systems require decimal hours. To convert minutes to a decimal, divide the minutes by 60. For example, 8 hours and 30 minutes becomes 8.5 hours (30 / 60 = 0.5). You can use our Work Hours tab to automatically deduct unpaid breaks and calculate your exact decimal hours.
