How to calculate square footage

  1. Measure each room or area. For a rectangle, measure the length and the width. For a triangle, measure the base and the height. For a circle, measure across the middle for the diameter.
  2. Work out the area of each shape. A rectangle is length times width, a triangle is half of base times height, and a circle is pi times the radius squared.
  3. Keep every measurement in the same unit, or let the calculator convert by choosing the unit for each area.
  4. Add the areas together for the total square footage. Add one area per shape above and the running total updates automatically.

Example: a living room that is 15 ft × 12 ft = 180 sq ft plus a bay window as a triangle that is ½ × 6 ft × 4 ft = 12 sq ft gives 192 square feet in total. The calculator above does this for every area and shows the total in square feet, square yards, and square meters.

How do you calculate square footage?

For a rectangular room, measure the length and the width in feet and multiply them, so a room 12 feet by 10 feet is 120 square feet. For a whole space, work out the square footage of each room or area and add them together. This calculator does that for as many areas as you need and keeps a running total.

For listings, only finished and heated space is usually counted as living area.

How do I convert square feet to square yards and square meters?

There are 9 square feet in a square yard, so divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. One square foot is about 0.0929 square meters, so multiply square feet by 0.0929 to get square meters. This calculator shows all three at once so you do not have to convert by hand.

How much extra should I add for flooring waste?

Most flooring projects add about 5 to 10 percent extra for cuts, mistakes, and offcuts, and more for diagonal or patterned layouts. Turn on the waste allowance and the calculator adds your chosen percentage on top of the measured area so you know how much material to buy.
