GPA Calculator: Cumulative & Semester
Calculate semester and cumulative GPA, plus the GPA you need next term to hit a target. Everything runs locally in your browser.
How to calculate GPA
- Convert each letter grade into grade points on your scale. On a 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, a C is 2.0, and so on. A weighted 5.0 scale gives extra points to honors and AP classes.
- Multiply each class's grade points by its credit hours to get that class's quality points.
- Add up the quality points from every class, then add up all of the credit hours.
- Divide the total quality points by the total credit hours. The result is your GPA.
Example: an A (4.0) in a 3 credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4 credit class give (4.0×3) + (3.0×4) = 24 quality points over 7 credit hours, so the GPA is 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43. The calculator above does this for every class and keeps a running cumulative GPA as you add terms.
GPA Calculator FAQ
How do you calculate GPA?
Multiply each class's grade points by its credit hours, add those quality points across all classes, and divide by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3 credit class and a B (3.0) in a 4 credit class give 24 quality points over 7 credits, which is a 3.43 GPA.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA puts every class on the same 4.0 scale, so an A is always 4.0. A weighted GPA gives harder classes such as honors, AP, or IB extra points, often on a 5.0 scale, so an A in an AP class can count as 5.0. This calculator can do both, so you can compare them.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Your cumulative GPA combines every semester, weighted by credit hours rather than a simple average of each semester's GPA. Add the quality points and credit hours from all terms, then divide. The calculator keeps your earlier credits and grade points so the cumulative number updates as you add a new term.
Can I turn a percentage or a different scale into a GPA?
Yes. You can map a percentage or letter grade to grade points, and you can adjust the scale because grade cutoffs differ from school to school. Switch between a 4.0 and a 5.0 scale, or edit the mapping to match how your school converts grades.
What GPA do I need next term to reach my target?
Enter your current GPA and the credits you have already earned, then set the GPA you want and the credits you plan to take. The calculator shows the average GPA you need in the upcoming classes to reach that target, so you can see whether a goal is realistic.
